A full-day Menicon Educational Workshop dedicated to contemporary soft and rigid contact lens fitting was successfully held in Heraklion, Crete, bringing together eye care professionals from across Greece for an intensive programme of scientific exchange and clinical education.
The workshop was organised by Contact-Lenses.gr, in collaboration with the Laboratory of Optics & Vision, University of Crete, reflecting a shared commitment to promoting evidence-based clinical practice through continuous professional education. The event also formed part of the ongoing educational activities of the Menicon Partners community, supporting the continuous development of eye care professionals through scientific education and clinical exchange.
International expertise in specialty contact lenses
The keynote speaker was Michel Guez, Scientific and Training Director at Menicon SAS - Menicon Global Professional Service Specialty Lens Division, who presented the latest developments in the design and clinical application of ROSE K2 XL semi-scleral and TIME XL scleral contact lenses.
His lectures focused on contemporary fitting philosophies, lens selection according to individual patient characteristics, and the management of challenging cases such as keratoconus and irregular corneas. Drawing on extensive international clinical experience, Michel Guez shared practical fitting strategies and discussed complex clinical cases, encouraging active interaction and discussion throughout the workshop.
Evidence-Based Contact Lens Practice
Dr Sotiris Plainis, Research Fellow in Vision Science at the Laboratory of Optics & Vision, School of Medicine, University of Crete, presented contemporary evidence-based approaches to the fitting of both soft and rigid contact lenses.
His presentations demonstrated how recent scientific evidence can be translated into everyday clinical practice through structured clinical decision making and the discussion of real clinical cases. Particular emphasis was placed on integrating research findings into routine patient care, enabling practitioners to optimise lens selection and improve visual outcomes. Topics included contemporary soft contact lens fitting, rigid corneal lens fitting principles, specialty contact lenses and the application of evidence-based practice in modern contact lens care.
Collaboration between academia, industry and clinical practice
A defining characteristic of the workshop was the close collaboration between academia, industry and clinical practice. The partnership between Menicon, Contact-Lenses.gr, and the Laboratory of Optics & Vision, University of Crete created an educational environment where scientific research, technological innovation and clinical experience were brought together within a common educational framework.
